Since its founding in 1930, SCHÖMA looks back to a more than 80 years lasting success story. Christoph Schöttler, grandfather of the current CEO, founded the company. The first SCHÖMA locomotives, which were mainly used in peat and gravel pits, were not only fitted with transmissions but also with one and two-cylinder diesel engines designed and manufactured by SCHÖMA.

The cardan drive, which has been developed and patented by SCHÖMA for our first locomotives, is now used in all modern diesel locomotives.

In the late 1970s, SCHÖMA successfully entered the tunnel construction market. By introducing the mechanised tunnel drive with corresponding boring machines conventional drives incl. earth excavation machinery and explosives had been replaced. This however required increased transport capacities. In the mid-1990s, SCHÖMA developed a new concept that made it possible to manage the increasing gradients encountered in the tunnel construction sector: Two diesel engines and a hydrostatic transmission are used to drive 16 axles.

The SCHÖMA product range includes locomotives that are used in underground tunnelling and transit constructions as well as in potassium and ore mining. Our locomotives are used under extreme conditions in various potassium mining shafts in Wunstorf (Germany) at a depth of 500 and 900 metres. Another major field of application is the peat industry. Germany is one of the major countries excavating large areas of peat. SCHÖMA is the only remaining manufacturer of locomotives for this field of activities. Until now SCHÖMA has delivered more than 6,500 locomotives and rail cars on all five continents.
